Frequently asked questions
For Dental Practices
What is sedation?
The NHS describes sedation as medicine that makes you feel sleepy and relaxes you both physically and mentally; it’s sometimes used to keep you calm during minor, painful or unpleasant procedures. Sedation is commonly used in dental practice.
Do you remain conscious when sedated?
Yes. The sedation we administer is called ‘conscious sedation’. You will feel calm and relaxed and will not remember the procedure afterwards.
How is the sedative administered?
Sedation is administered intravenously through a cannula either in your arm or hand.
Is sedation safe?
All medical procedures come with some element of risk and this will be explained to you as part of your preparation for sedation. Sedationists are legally required to undertake rigorous training and to work to national standards. You will be carefully monitored whilst sedated for a safe and effective experience.
What is the process when I book?
Sedation needs to be booked by your dental practice. If you are interested in conscious sedation because of a dental phobia or because you need complex dental treatment, please talk to your dental practice and they can contact us on your behalf.
Which Patients qualify for sedation?
As per General Dentist Council (GDC) guidelines, it is your responsibility to assess each patient’s suitability for sedation. We will provide a consultation form for you to complete in order to help assess if the patient is suitable for intravenous sedation.
What assessments do you do?
Once you have assessed a patient as suitable for sedation and referred them to us, we take a full medical history, pre-operative assessment and give them all the information they need to prepare for the sedation procedure. We will then attend the practice at the agreed time and date to administer intravenous sedation prior to the dental treatment. We will monitor the patient closely during the procedure and the recovery period, and issue them with aftercare advice. We always advise patients that they should bring another adult with them to take them home and should plan to avoid doing anything responsible – childcare, driving, operating machinery etc. for the next 24 hours.
Are you appropriately qualified and competent as a Seditionist?
Yes. I am a qualified dental sedationist and I can supply all certification and CPD evidence prior to the appointment. I am fully compliant with the requirements of CQC and work to the Standards for Conscious Sedation in Provision of Dental Care: Report of the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry 2015 (updated March 2020) and am aware of the Conscious Sedation in Dentistry: Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (2017).
Do you supply the sedation equipment?
I bring all sedation equipment and will only need access to your medical emergency kit.
Are you Insured?
Yes. I can provide my insurance and indemnity documents as part of the booking process.
Are you DBS Checked?
Yes. I can provide my DBS certificate as part of the booking process.
Can you sedate children?
No. This service is for adults only who meet the clinical criteria for our service.
Which Areas do you Cover?
We mainly offer mobile sedation to dental practices in Greater London, Essex, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Subject to availability, we can sometimes travel to other areas of England – please get in touch to enquire.

Are there any Cancellation Fees?
